COLUMBIA, S.C. — A North Carolina fiber optics company has announced it will be making a $100 million investment in South Carolina's Richland and Lexington counties to bring ultra-high-speed 100% fiber optic internet service to the area.
Lumos Fiber, based in High Point, will install close to 1,200 miles of fiber optic technology to significantly improve the technology infrastructure in the Columbia area.
According to the company, Lumos fiber networks have speeds available up to 5 Gbps x 5 Gbps, equating to 385 times faster uploads and 30 times faster downloads than traditional cable.
The areas planned for fiber optic expansion include underserved portions of Columbia, Forest Acres, and Arcadia Lakes in Richland County; and West Columbia, Cayce, Lexington, Irmo, and Springdale in Lexington County.
Preliminary engineering work on the project will begin in mid-2023 with construction to start shortly after. Residents in these areas will be informed by mail when the project begins.
