Brennen Elementary reopens: Here's what may have caused the odor

Officials say the building services staff and outside contractors completed their work in investigating the odor on Sunday.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — After being closed due to a foul odor last Friday, Brennen Elementary School has reopened.

While the precise cause of the odor was not determined, officials no hazardous materials were found during an inspection but several items were cited that could have contributed to the odor.

Officials say the building services staff and outside contractors completed their work in investigating the odor on Sunday. The work done included environmental air quality testing; deep cleaning and electrostatic disinfection; odor abatement in two classrooms; and thorough cleaning of the HVAC/ventilation system.

While a single cause of the odor was not identified, several items were identified as possible contributors to the odor. Officials said all of those items were addressed, including repairing a wall in a restroom; removing an aquarium from a classroom; and eliminating a stale smell from one HVAC unit.

The school reopened on Monday.
