A ribbon cutting is within reach for new Old Mill walking trail

This comes almost 9 years after the great flood.

LEXINGTON, S.C. — A new trail over the Old Mill Dam in Lexington is close to completion nearly nine years after a flood caused the dam to fail.

The Old Mill Brewpub looks over what used to be the Old Mill Dam. The owners said they felt the impact of the flood.

“I hear a lot of people say I haven’t been back since the flood,” Kelly Clinger, co-owner of the Old Mill Brewpub said.

But after the rain comes a rainbow, the Lexington Mayor said a new project is bringing healing to the community.

“It definitely is a rainbow ending for something that happened so tragic,” Mayor Hazel Livingston said.

In 2015 a historic flood caused the old mill dam to fail and the overflow caused major damage to everything in its path. Leaving businesses like Old Mill Brewpub damaged physically.

“Business-wise we lost part of our porch that was enclosed,” Clinger said.

But now construction is coming along after almost a year.

“When you go out there and see it you’re going to understand it’s just gorgeous it’s just a nice place to go walk,” Livingston said.

The Lexington mayor said a ribbon cutting could happen in the next few months.

“We’re working on it right now installing the lighting, pet waste stations, there’s going to be two parking areas that will be constructed at a later date,” she said.

Kelly Clinger said she hopes this brings new and old people back to the restaurant.

“We’re super excited about it and you know hopefully the walking trail will bring more people will come to see us as well,” she said.

The mayor said she doesn’t have an exact date for the trail to open.

News 19 reached out the owner of the old mill dam for a construction update but did not hear back.
