Deputies believe Cordova man used tracking devices to stalk victim before murder

On Monday afternoon, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell held a news conference where he revealed for the first time new details in the case.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, S.C. — Orangeburg County deputies say they found the man who killed two people at a home several weeks ago.

Richard Haynes of Cordova was apprehended by several law enforcement agencies last Friday at a hotel in Myrtle Beach. He’s now being charged with two counts of murder, burglary and stalking.

Back on March 24, Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said 23-year-old James Christopher Robinson Jr. and 32-year-old Kayla Beason were found dead inside Beason’s home.

The sheriff said Haynes broke into Beason’s home and shot them.

“We still pray for the families. That’s an ongoing thing,” said Ravenell. “We want to bring justice for the families and bring justice to this individual that had no sympathy or anything else.”

The arrest warrant says Haynes used electronic tracking devices on Beason’s car to stalk her.

Sheriff Ravenell says they were able to use those tracking devices to help build a case against Haynes.

“He took the devices but he wasn’t clever enough to take the boxes he bought them in so during our search warrant those were discovered and we tracked them down to information on when they were bought, who bought them” said Ravenell. “But we also tracked them down to the time when he took them off the vehicle and that time was after the homicides.”

Sheriff Ravenell says those who commit crimes in Orangeburg will face consequences no matter where they go.

“You know this guy could have went out and commit another crime or the same crime,” said Sheriff Ravenell. “You know, I think he thought that Myrtle Beach was far but, you know, we’ve gone to New York city, we’ve gone to different kind of places so Myrtle Beach definitely wasn’t far enough for him to commit this crime and then go lay up on the beach. That’s sickening.”

The investigation is still ongoing but the sheriff’s office is looking for others that may have been involved or have more information.
