Bicyclist killed in Sumter crash identified; police, troopers investigating

The crash happened early Saturday morning, police say.

SUMTER, S.C. — A Sumter County man has died following a crash early Saturday morning on Broad Street.

The Sumter Police Department said the crash happened around 6:15 a.m. near Broad Street and Carter Road. Preliminary details suggest the bicyclist was struck by a minivan. Police said the driver immediately stopped to check on the victim, later identified as 50-year-old Carlos Sumpter. Coroner Robbie Baker said Sumpter died at the scene of the crash.

Sumter Police said their office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) are investigating the crash.
