One dead after train, box truck crash in Lower Richland, two sent to hospital

The collision happened on a set of tracks crossing Third Street in Hopkins.

HOPKINS, S.C. — One person is dead and two people have been sent to the hospital after a train and a box truck collided in Lower Richland County Monday afternoon.

The collision took place off Clarkson Road and Third Street in Hopkins. 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says the collision happened at 3:51 p.m. between the truck and the train.  At the time, the box truck was traveling east on Third Street and the train was traveling south.

The box truck had three people inside. One of the people died at the scene while the other two were taken for treatment at the hospital. The extent of their injuries is not yet known. 

The person who died at the scene hasn't been identified yet. 

Troopers say there were three people inside the train but none of them sustained injuries. 

Images from the scene showed the box truck sustained heavy damage to the center and rear of the vehicle, with a hole ripped on the side of the truck. 

The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the collision.
