SUMTER, S.C. — A South Carolina lottery winner said he couldn't stop crying when he learned that he would be taking home a sizable jackpot.

According to South Carolina Education Lottery officials, the winner found out about his good fortune when he was already at home on the couch. It was at that moment, that he began to tear up.

Once he was able to collect himself, lottery officials said he told his wife - repeatedly.

"I must have told her 50 times," he said to lottery officials.

And even then, it apparently took a while before she believed him. He even showed her the ticket - but since she didn't play the lottery, she didn't realize he had won.

However, a little more explanation got the point across that he had just beaten one in 720,000 odds on a $5 ticket and won $200,000 in the process.

The winner told officials he plans to put the money toward his upcoming retirement.

As for the store that sold the winning ticket, the Town and Country store on Highway 15 South in Sumter will get a $2,000 commission.

Anyone hoping to see a repeat of this winner's luck still has a chance. There are still two top prizes in the Carolina Jackpot game.
