Cassatt man dies one day after fiery Kershaw County crash

Despite people rushing to help get the victim out of the truck, the coroner's office said he died on Saturday afternoon.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. — The Kershaw County coroner's office has released the name of a man who died following a fiery crash on Friday night.

According to Coroner David West, 911 operators received the call of an accident around 9 p.m. on Thoroughfare Branch Road in Cassatt.  West said the driver, identified as 44-year-old Robert Steven Schwartz, had lost control of a truck on the dirt portion of the road and hit a tree. The truck then caught fire.

West said that people in the area came upon the wreck and helped Schwartz out of the truck, after which he was airlifted to the JMS Burn Center in Augusta, Georgia.

However, Coroner West said that he ultimately died on Saturday just before 5 p.m. from burns sustained in the aftermath of the crash. West added that the victim was from the Cassatt area.
