AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities say one person has died, and others were injured in a Saturday night crash involving an ambulance.

The Aiken County Sheriff's Office, the Aiken Department of Public Safety, and the Aiken County Coroner's Office are investigating a crash on Richland Avenue near Augusta Road around 10:20 p.m.

The sheriff's office said a Dodge Charger struck the passenger side of the ambulance. The driver of the Charger died, and the ambulance crew was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. When the Dodge hit it, Aiken County Coroner Darryl Ables said the ambulance was turning onto Augusta Road. Authorities said the ambulance wasn't transporting patients during the crash.

Coroner Ables identified the deceased as 20-year-old Alonzo Carter of Aiken, adding that Carter died at the scene. An autopsy will be performed in Newberry.

The sheriff's office said it expects to release additional details as they become available.
