SUV driver dies after rear-ending truck, trailer

Authorities say one person was killed in the two-vehicle crash late Wednesday.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed on Thursday that a crash involving two vehicles left one person dead the night before.

According to Master Trooper David Jones, crews were called to the area of U.S. Highway 178 (North Road) near Deer Crossing Road around 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

They learned that a 2014 Mercedes SUV had slammed into the rear of a trailer being towed by a 2007 Dodge truck. Both were heading east on 178 when the truck slowed to make a left turn when it was struck by the SUV.

The driver of the truck wasn't injured but the driver of the SUV died at the scene. The victim's identity wasn't released. The county coroner typically handles this announcement.
