Head-on I-20 crash kills one driver, injures 4 others in Lexington County

The driver that authorities say was heading east in the westbound lanes died at the crash scene, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified a man killed in a wrong-way crash that also injured four others on Interstate 20 in Lexington County early Sunday morning.

Master Trooper Mitchell Ridgeway with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the crash happened just before 2 a.m. in the westbound lanes of the interstate at mile marker 53 between the exits to Longs Pond Road and South Lake Drive. Ridgeway said a 2015 Nissan sedan was traveling east in the westbound lanes and struck a Chevrolet SUV head-on.

The driver of the Nissan, identified by the Lexington County Coroner's Office as 55-year-old Brian Francis Vyhnal of Hephzibah, Georgia, wasn't wearing a seatbelt and died at the crash scene. The coroner's office added that three adults and a minor in the other vehicle received minor injuries. Ridgeway said at least one of them was taken to Lexington Medical Center for treatment.

Ridgeway said the crash is still under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
