Weather is heating up to begin this Fall

Temperatures will be rising into the middle and upper 90s this week.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — If you have been paying attention to the forecast lately you probably know by now we have seen quite a bit of sunny weather here in the Midlands. While this makes for great weather to do things outside, the return of heat in the forecast will make things feel like Summer just in time for the first day of Fall.

As of Tuesday, we are in one of the longest stretches of dry weather we have seen this year, with plenty of sunshine in the forecast it appears we could be approaching the longest period of no rain we have see this year.

The reason for this? It comes all comes down high pressure.

During this time of the year, we often see what is called the Bermuda high. This type of setup allows for plenty of moisture to be brought into the region along with generally warmer weather.

What we have been seeing recently though is what is referred to as a continental high. These highs are over land so they have very low moisture amounts to move around. This dry air heats and cools very easily.

Looking at the coming days that dry air is expected to heat up quite a bit not only in the Midlands but across the southeast. Here, at home middle to upper 90s are possible by Thursday.

That type of hot weather is becoming more common though with our changing climate. Looking at the past few decades we are seeing about 5 more days of our hottest days in the month of September.
