Man charged with murder in killing of man found wrapped in tarp in Sumter woods

A group of hunters found the victim's body in the woods.

SUMTER, S.C. — State agents have arrested a suspect who they say killed a man in Sumter County last year, wrapped his body in a tarp, then left him in a wooded area.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) said Tuesday they've arrested 22-year-old Daejon Rashad Jackson and charged him with murder in the death of Frederick Nelson Jr.  Jackson is also facing counts of  possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime and trafficking fentanyl.

According to a SLED arrest warrant, on November 14, 2023, Jackson shot Nelson approximately 12 times. Officer said he then moved the body to a set of woods near the town of Rembert, and wrapped the body in bed sheets, a comforter, and a red tarp.

Jackson's body was found on November 26 about 30 feet off Cimmaron Road near the Rembert and Pisgah communities. Coroner Robbie Baker said a group of hunters noticed a smell found a body wrapped in a tarp. They then called law enforcement.  Baker said the area where the body was found was in a sparsely populated region of the county with only a handful of houses along the nearby road.

The warrant said recorded statements, evidence located at a home, telephone records, autopsy results, and SLED lab findings led them to file charges against Jackson.

The drug charge comes from an incident back on November 30 of last year. Officers said they want to Jackson's home for an unrelated criminal investigation and found a box containing a plastic bag with a powder substance. Officer said the substance tested positive for fentanyl.
