ELGIN, S.C. — Fire crews from multiple departments have gained control of a brush fire that spread to various structures and vehicles in Elgin on Sunday afternoon.

A Kershaw County Fire Service spokesperson said its crews joined firefighters from Elgin, Lugoff and Columbia in the 1200 block of Highway Church Road after the fire was first spotted from nearby I-20 around 2:15 p.m.

It took a little over two hours and the South Carolina Forestry Commission's assistance to control the fire. Fire officials said they were able to dig a break around the fire to keep it from spreading any further.

Authorities said the structures and vehicles that burned in the incident appeared to be abandoned. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
