Sizable earthquake rattles Georgia; reportedly felt in Columbia

The 3.9 earthquake happened around 4 a.m. on Saturday.

STILLMORE, Ga. — An earthquake with an epicenter outside a small Georgia town was apparently felt throughout the Southeast on Saturday morning, including Columbia.

The magnitude 3.9 quake was reported around 4 a.m. outside of Stillmore, Georgia which is about 70 miles northwest of Savannah, Georgia, and 125 miles southwest of Columbia.

The majority of the people who felt the rumble were in the immediate area near the epicenter, however, more sparse reports came in from as far away as the Atlanta metropolitan area, Brunswick Georgia, and even the border between Fairfield and Richland counties closer to home. That information comes from the U.S. Geological Survey's own self-reporting tool "Did You Feel It?" which, as of 10 a.m., had about 1,294 reports.

The agency also reports that earthquakes east of the Rockies in North America are less frequent than those on the West Coast. However, they tend to be felt over a larger area.

Meanwhile, seismometers all over South Carolina registered the quake.
