IRMO, S.C. — Irmo officials says a large water main break is blocking one of the main roadways in the area late Thursday afternoon.
The incident is in the eastbound lanes of Lake Murray Boulevard near Irmo Drive. That's in the direction of heading from the dam to the freeway, and is also near Irmo Elementary School and the Kroger shopping center
Irmo Police said the eastbound lane of Lake Murray Boulevard has been closed from Irmo Drive to Saint Andrews Road. Traffic is being diverted onto Irmo Drive and Saint Andrews Road at this time.
Both the fire department and police are asking people to avoid the area if possible. The fire department said it is expecting a long term closure.
This area is a short distance away from where Murray Boulevard was plagued with water main breaks last summer. That problem took weeks to ultimately get a permanent fix.
